Codicote Primary School

Codicote Primary School

Hertfordshire County Council (HCC) appointed Ingleton Wood to complete the design and delivery of a three Primary School expansion project in Phase 8 of their programme. Codicote Primary School, near Welwyn, was the third and comprised a 1 Form of Entry (1FE) expansion, doubling the size of the School and consisted of a new 8-classroom block, works to the existing school, car park expansion and associated landscape works.

The School expansion was in direct response to the newly approved adjacent housing developments within Codicote and to support this future growth in population. As part of a Section 106 agreement to this housing approval HCC and the School were provided land to create additional playing fields for which Ingleton Wood consulted extensively with Sport England.

The completed teaching block consists of 8 new classrooms with learning support space, surrounding landscape works, extended car parking and suitable proposals for sports pitches on the main, south field of the School. Considerable engagement with the School and other stakeholders informed the brief for the new block and the ethos of the design. A core value from the School was to create a centrally shared, open space used as a multi-functional teaching area through which free movement is encouraged.

Great importance was given to sustainable issues during the design, aspiring to and finally achieving BREEAM excellent. The green roof extends to form a canopy all around the building providing shelter for outdoor play and shade for solar gain control. The design was progressed to form a centralised atrium space still within the BB103 guideline areas. To add quality to the space, additional volume was proposed which also proved sustainably beneficial promoting natural ventilation with passive airflow through classrooms, into the atrium and out through the high-level windows and vice-versa in opposite seasons. The glazing and building orientation also decreases solar gain requiring less mechanically controlled heating.

The School were ‘absolutely delighted’ with the end result.

Testimonials

“Our new building has delivered everything we hoped for and provides a calm, versatile environment for everyone. Having the opportunity to work closely with the team throughout the design and implementation stages has enabled us to create a structure which kept the children at the centre. Careful consideration to every aspect has resulted in an expansion which works harmoniously with the existing building and school grounds.
Reflecting the ethos of the school and how it operates, the building was developed collaboratively, to deliver the design brief on every level. Through a creative approach to the internal configuration, spaces have been created which support and enhance teaching and learning. With the use of internal glazing, around a shared space, a sense of connection between classes is fostered, whilst enabling the teaching rooms to be quiet and distraction free. The overall feel is of light, space and community.
A favourite place for everyone is the central atrium, which is used for group activities, reading and socialising. It also doubles as a library, large meeting space, dance and drama studio, and even as an indoor athletics hall on rainy days! The children love everything about the building. They are intrigued by the cladding at the main entrance, which changes colour as the light alters throughout the day and particularly enjoy using the high tech washrooms.

Everything, from the colour schemes to the external landscaping, has been planned together. We have felt equal partners throughout the process and have worked seamlessly with our architects, Ingleton Wood, and the team from Herts County Council, with the views of children and staff taken into account throughout. The project has been a privilege to be part of.”
