The environmental goal of producing carbon zero homes by 2016 has seen an increase in the use of timber and cold formed metal frame construction. While these are often pre-assembled in panels, they can come to site in modular format. Pre-assembly raises quality of the building to ‘factory grade’ and increases the speed of construction on site.
These products are often highly insulated, making the running costs of the completed building very low.
Often, these forms of construction are sub-contractor designed with us taking overall structural responsibility for the completed building. This requires a flexible and cooperative working relationship with contractors and designers.
Often the flow of design information required between the designers can be critical in not only the building design but procurement and programme on site. Having worked on these types of projects for many years we understand this process and can give added value by advising on risks to programme and cost when selecting these types of construction.
While these structures can be sub-contractor designed, we are also capable of this type of design in-house. This experience is useful in understanding the advantages and possible pitfalls in this type of construction.
