Sustainable Drainage systems

Surface water is a valuable resource and this should be reflected in the way it is managed.  The National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) mandates that a sustainable drainage strategy (SuDS) adheres to the hierarchy of drainage as outlined in the National Planning Practice Guidance.  The hierarchy advocates the use of SuDS to manage surface water runoff (rainfall) in the most sustainable way possible by closely resembling that of natural drainage patterns.  The emphasis is to target disposal of runoff at source, followed by site-wide disposal, and then regional control for larger developments with strategic drainage infrastructure.  To achieve this, disposal should first be considered to the ground through infiltration components, followed by discharge to a watercourse, and finally to a public surface water sewer.  This hierarchy helps to reduce flow rates to watercourses and public surface water sewers alleviating downstream flooding and the burden on drainage systems.

SuDS offer great flexibility, allowing for a wide range of cost-effective and innovative drainage solutions. They can be tailored to suit different site conditions and project requirements, accommodating both small and large developments. This flexibility ensures that SuDS can effectively manage runoff while integrating seamlessly into the overall landscape design. By incorporating various elements such as permeable surfaces, swales, detention basins, and wetlands; SuDS can address both immediate and long-term drainage needs, ultimately contributing to the sustainability and resilience of urban and rural environments.  Integrating green SuDS, such as living roofs and rain gardens can contribute to Biodiversity Net Gain, now a mandatory requirement recently introduced by Defra for planning applications in England.

The Pre-Development team at Ingleton Wood can provide guidance from the outset and throughout the development process to determine the most suitable approach for your development.
