Harwich Port

Ingleton Wood were instructed by RG Carter and the Harwich International Port to provide Civil and Structural Engineering services for the new Border Control Point, Inspection Facilities and associated infrastructure proposed at Harwich International Port Ltd. The completed facility enables the smooth and secure inspection of goods entering the UK under post-Brexit regulations. 

The scope of the project was to provide dedicated and greater capacity inspection facilities, including buildings and associated accommodation for produce and plants and a dedicated Border Force inspection and office building together with the associated road, parking and infrastructure. The proposed development was constructed in greenfield land at the eastern side of the existing port boundary. The site is located within Flood Zone 3 due to its close proximity to the River Stour and Orwell, the Port is currently protected via flood defences. 

Ingleton Wood were responsible for the complex foul and surface water drainage arrangement for the onsite surface water flows together with the associated hardstanding and construction build-ups. The Civil Engineering design team obtained the necessary approvals associated with the surface water and foul water discharge. 

This proposed heavy civil engineering project was developed on a large amount of fill material overlain on virgin estuarian deposits. The project was progressed to detailed design in accordance with the performance specification, where Ingleton Wood carried out the full design for all structures, foundations, roads, access and parking alignment and engineered construction. Ingleton Wood also designed the complex foul and surface water networks consisting of large scale pumps and foul water monitoring and below ground diversion arrangement.
