We have recently finished archaeological excavations at St Helena School in Colchester ahead of commencing construction of a new block extension funded via CIF (ACMF). The school stands on the site of a Romano-Celtic temple, which was excavated in 1935 ahead of the building of the school. Amongst the findings were high quality cream coloured Roman roof tiles, an unusual find as Roman roof tiles are usually made of red clay, which suggest a special building. The excavations were extended which then uncovered part of the foundation of the temple precinct wall, thought to be at the front of the temple. Further information on the findings are detailed on The Colchester Archaeologist website below: http://www.thecolchesterarchaeologist.co.uk/?p=16086 http://www.thecolchesterarchaeologist.co.uk/?p=16232 Images: Copyright of The Colchester Archaeologist |
