Refurbished spa opens in historic Ironmonger Row Turkish Baths in Islington Monday, 19th February 2024

Property and construction consultancy Ingleton Wood were pleased to support the state-of-the-art complete refurbishment of an affordable wellness facility at the historic Ironmonger Row Turkish Baths in Islington.

The spa, which is situated in the historic building that has housed a public bathhouse since it was built in 1931, includes a range of luxurious treatment facilities including a salt infused steam room, juniper sauna, infrared relaxation benches, and plunge pool, as well as a relaxation room and treatment rooms.

The refurbishment of the space comes after a fire in 2022 which destroyed the spa area, requiring extensive renovation works. The newly opened spa is a significant improvement on the facilities that were in place before the fire, including many new and innovative features.

Our Practice’s London office was appointed to provide multidisciplinary services including quantity surveying, project management, structural engineering, building services engineering, and building surveying.

David Williams, Building Surveyor Director, said: “We were thrilled to support the full refurbishment of the Ironmonger Row Turkish Baths and help create a unique and affordable wellness facility that combines heritage and luxury for the local community in Islington.

“Using our extensive experience in heritage and leisure restoration, we worked closely with Islington Council to ensure their needs were met while ensuring the project was carried out with the utmost care to preserve the venue’s historic charm and architecture significance.

“We are pleased to have achieved our aims of enhancing the overall visitor experience and preserving the legacy of the iconic community asset. We join Islington Council in looking forward to generations of people from all backgrounds enjoying the revitalised new spa.”

The refurbished spa’s facilities include:

  • Five new treatment rooms
  • Fully equipped thermal spa including Salt sauna, juniper sauna with infrared, infrared relaxation benches, steam room, salt infused steam room, ice room, cold plunge pool
  • Feature showers including cold bucket shower
  • Traditional Turkish hot rooms
  • Hammam treatment benches
  • Dry relaxation space with loungers
  • Showers and changing spaces, including vanity area with hair dryers and straighteners

Councillor Nurullah Turan, Executive Member for Health and Social Care at Islington Council, said: “We are determined to make Islington a more equal borough, where all of our residents can access health, wellbeing and leisure facilities.

“The new spa at the iconic Ironmonger Row Baths is a huge addition to Islington, offering a high end spa experience at a more affordable cost, including discounted concessionary rates.

“We are working hard to upgrade our leisure facilities across the borough, to help residents stay active and healthy. The fact that the spa sold out in advance of its opening day is testament to the desire for the new spa to open, as well as the affection that local people have for Ironmonger Row Baths.”

A short walk from Old Street and Barbican Stations, Ironmonger Row Baths is also home to a recently restored gym, a 30m swimming pool and 15m teaching pool, as well as studios for cardio and functional training sessions.
