Volunteers from Ingleton Wood were delighted to lend a hand and assist Neilcott Construction Limited at the Wolves Lane Centre in Haringey, North London, and help work on the new community and educational facilities currently under construction.
The new buildings, which are constructed utilising low-carbon straw bales, require some finishing touches before they can begin providing operational spaces for a range of uses, including;
🙌 | A community event space
🛠️ | A workshop
🌡️ | A temperature-controlled storage facility
🤗| A new HQ for a local charity
In the fresh Spring weather, enthusiastic volunteers from Ingleton Wood got their hands dirty – quite literally – as they helped fill and level the hard standings around the site, and clay plastered the inside of two of the buildings.
After a busy morning spent earth moving and plastering, a delicious lunch was provided by the Centre’s community café – which uses organic vegetables grown on-site. The café feeds the local community daily, alongside the centre’s educational and community projects, and our team was extremely grateful for the homegrown sustenance!
Throughout the day, the team also spent time learning about the benefits of straw bale construction, along with the amazing sustainable qualities of natural clay and straw plaster – both in terms of its ability to improve the air quality, perform well in differing climates and the positive effect of trapping carbon dioxide.
Straw bales, a by-product of agriculture, require no special treatment or processing, making them a very sustainable and cost-effective building material with excellent thermal properties.
These hands-on activities provide genuine insight into sustainable building practices and enable our team to continue delivering social and environmental change; underpinning our goal of solving global challenges one building at a time.
Thank you to everyone involved in this fantastic occasion, and we look forward to assisting again in the near future!
