Ingleton Wood is proud to have been appointed by Hertfordshire County Council to design and deliver the relocation and refurbishment of Ware Library; a project that underscores our commitment to creating accessible, community-focused spaces.
The project involved the relocation of the library to a more prominent and accessible location within a former retail unit on the High Street, situated in a conservation area. The new building also required an extensive works package to restore and upgrade it to modern standards.
Revitalising the building
The initial phase of the project addressed significant structural and repair challenges, including:
- Replacing and upgrading the roof to meet current building regulations.
- Structural infills and extensive repointing of the external facade.
- Overhauling the underground drainage system.
- Only after these foundational works were completed could the main library refurbishment begin.
Creating a community-focused library
Ingleton Wood worked closely with the library to develop a brief that reflected their vision for a welcoming, vibrant, and inclusive space.
The refurbishment transformed the retail unit into a modern library, featuring:
- A main library area with dedicated reading spaces and extensive shelving for a diverse collection of books and learning resources.
- A community space and historical area celebrating Ware's rich history and heritage.
- Specially designed children’s and young adult areas.
- Support facilities, including workrooms, storage, toilets, and staff accommodation.
- The interior design incorporated The Council’s branding through thoughtful use of finishes, colours, and furniture.
Unique elements, such as imagery and carpet designs in the children’s area, were inspired by Ware’s historic riverside gazebos, creating a vibrant and locally relevant atmosphere.
Accessibility and innovation
The project retained the existing shopfront, upgraded entrance doors for improved accessibility, and introduced new manifestations and signage to enhance visibility. The library also features the innovative ‘Open+’ system, enabling out-of-hours access for library members.
Futureproofing the space
The first floor was fitted with a new fire alarm and detection system in anticipation of its future use as residential accommodation by Adult Services.
To facilitate this, a new fire escape staircase enclosure was added to the ground floor, ensuring compliance with safety standards.
A collaborative effort
Ingleton Wood’s multi-disciplinary approach was led by our Project Manager, who ensured the seamless integration of architecture, structural improvements, and interior design. Collaboration with the client-appointed furniture supplier further enhanced the functionality and aesthetic of the space; making it a true asset to the local community.
The new Ware Library stands as a testament to the power of thoughtful design and collaboration, offering a vibrant, inclusive space that meets the needs of its diverse users while preserving and enhancing its historical context.
Community feedback
The newly opened library has been warmly received by the local community, with residents sharing glowing feedback about their experiences.
The feedback highlights how the library’s modern design, welcoming spaces, and thoughtful amenities have created a beloved community hub.
Here’s what some visitors had to say:
“It’s lovely – nice and bright with the big windows, plenty of room.”
“Very nice. I’ve been looking forward to it. Spacious, modern, and welcoming.”
“I think you’ve done very well. Love the Children’s Library, it is beautiful.”
