Ensuring fire and electrical safety in schools: Ingleton Wood’s expertise in upgrading school facilities Monday, 3rd March 2025

Ingleton Wood has extensive experience supporting education facilities in meeting updated fire and electrical safety requirements.

Through our expertise in Condition Improvement Fund (CIF) bids and our comprehensive knowledge of building regulations and their implications, our team ensure that school, college, and academy buildings can meet the highest standards for safety and efficiency.

Designing for compliance: electrical and fire safety in schools

Outdated fire alarms, emergency lighting, and electrical systems are common in older buildings, where existing infrastructure has aged or been expanded over time, leading to the existing system no longer aligning with the latest safety requirements.

Ingleton Wood brings expertise in designing and upgrading these systems to comply with the latest standards such as BS 5839; however, fire compartmentation associated with the fire alarm systems are often overlooked. Both the active and passive systems need to be reviewed to provide a robust detection coverage for escape routes and corridors.

Fire compartmentation and coverage: the impact on school safety

One of the key elements of our fire safety approach is fire compartmentation, which helps prevent fires from spreading quickly across school buildings.

By reviewing fire door ratings and identifying areas needing additional detection devices, we help ensure that buildings are divided into safe zones to protect students and staff during an emergency.

When a fire risk assessment reveals areas where compartmentation or alarm coverage is insufficient, schools frequently consult with us to manage the upgrade process and bring facilities back into compliance.

Hold-open devices on fire doors, often convenient for daily operations, can inadvertently compromise fire compartments if not managed correctly, so our team collaborates closely with schools to review current fire protection measures, assess fire door ratings, and recommend upgrades to ensure fire compartmentation integrity.

We guide schools in implementing best practices according to the BS 7273-4:2015 code of practice for fire door release mechanisms to help them maintain both safety and functionality.

Energy efficiency and electrical safety: modernising school lighting systems

Electrical safety and energy efficiency go hand in hand when it comes to lighting.

Many schools have the opportunity to save energy and reduce costs through lighting upgrades, and our team is well-versed in designing energy-efficient lighting replacements.

By implementing advanced lighting control systems, schools can significantly reduce energy usage, while also enhancing safety and compliance.

These upgrades offer schools financial savings that can be redirected to other critical needs, all while ensuring classrooms and facilities are illuminated sufficiently.

Adapting regulations for modern school use

School facilities now serve as multi-use buildings, often hosting parents' evenings, after-school programmes, and community events.

The scope of building regulations has grown to accommodate this versatility, ensuring that fire safety and electrical systems are robust enough for both daily and extended use.

Importantly, these regulations do not vary between types of schools, meaning every institution must meet the same high standards, from primary schools to sixth-form colleges.

Supporting schools through Condition Improvement Fund (CIF) bids

Many schools turn to the Condition Improvement Fund to cover the costs of safety upgrades, yet without proper guidance, bids may lack the necessary detail to be awarded funding.

Ingleton Wood assists schools in preparing CIF applications that address all relevant safety measures, ensuring that bid proposals are comprehensive and meet the required criteria.

From initial assessments to the design and installation of compliant systems, we support schools at every stage of the funding process.
