Ingleton Wood attends Building Magazine’s inaugural Good Employer Guide Live event Friday, 7th March 2025

Building Magazine’s Good Employer Guide is a key platform for showcasing organisations that champion outstanding workplace cultures. Ingleton Wood is honoured to be featured in the 2025 edition and to have participated in the Guide’s inaugural live event.

Ingleton Wood attends the Good Employer Guide’s live event

Held at the prestigious Royal Institution in Mayfair, Central London, the Good Employer Guide inaugural live event brought together experts and thought leaders from the construction industry to discuss the key challenges facing employers in the built environment.

Simon Gorst, Partner at Ingleton Wood, and Michael Johnston, our Communications and Digital Marketing Officer, attended the event, with Simon commenting:

"It was truly inspiring to take part in conversations shaping the future of the construction industry; particularly discussions on bridging skill gaps, advancing gender equality, and fostering inclusive, diverse workplace cultures. I particularly liked the data-led approach to such matters, which really drives home the improvements that need to be made.

Ingleton Wood believes in the power of meaningful, collaborative dialogue with fellow employers to address the industry’s challenges and build a stronger, more resilient sector.

Events like these empower us to drive positive change and cultivate an environment where diversity and talent can be attracted and then thrive in the wonderful and varied careers we have in our industry."

Ingleton Wood’s key takeaways from the Good Employer Guide Live event

The first panel discussion of the Good Employer Guide live event, ‘The Skills Challenge: How Do Good Employers Attract and Retain Talent from the Built Environment and Beyond’, offered valuable insights into addressing the industry's ongoing challenges of attracting, developing, and retaining skilled professionals.

Attracting the next generation of talent

As a practice, we recognise the importance of showcasing the built environment’s innovation, purpose, and diversity to attract new talent.

By strengthening our partnerships with schools, colleges, and universities and offering hands-on experiences and mentoring, we aim to bridge the gap between education and industry. Additionally, by showcasing career pathways within our practice and the wider sector, we strive to attract both emerging professionals and career changers.

Investing in training and development

Upskilling and professional development are integral to ensuring our team feels valued and prepared for the evolving demands of the industry. Embracing emerging technologies, such as AI-driven design and digital tools, allows us to create new opportunities for innovation.

By fostering a culture of continuous learning, we support long-term career progression and build future-ready teams within our practice.

Retaining and nurturing talent

Creating inclusive, supportive, and forward-thinking workplaces is central to maintaining employee engagement and loyalty at Ingleton Wood.

A strong focus on diversity, equality, and inclusion (DE&I) ensures every team member feels empowered and respected. By encouraging innovation, collaboration, and personal development, we strive to create an environment where our employees flourish, contributing to both their success and the success of Ingleton Wood.

The second panel discussion of the event, ‘The Diversity Challenge: How Do the Best Employers Inspire, Manage, and Measure a Changing Workforce’, highlighted the critical importance of integrating ED&I into every area of our industry; and underscored how essential these principles are in shaping the future of the workforce.

Breaking down barriers to meaningful change

While we recognise the progress made in advancing ED&I within our industry, we believe there is still significant work to be done to ensure every team member feels valued, empowered, and able to thrive in an environment that celebrates diverse perspectives.

A key motivator for our participation in the Good Employer Guide is our ongoing commitment to making meaningful change.

The role of leadership in driving ED&I

Leadership is crucial in driving ED&I initiatives at both Ingleton Wood and our wider industry. Senior leaders must lead by example, setting clear expectations and holding themselves accountable to create a culture where ED&I is prioritised at every level.

Strengthening recruitment and retention strategies

Attracting diverse talent is just the beginning. As a practice, we focus on fostering an inclusive and supportive environment that ensures employees from all backgrounds thrive. By implementing inclusive recruitment practices, mentorship programmes, and clear career progression, we are striving to create a workplace where all team members can succeed.

Engaging communities to build a representative workforce

Ingleton Wood actively engages with the communities we serve to promote equity and representation, ensuring that our workforce reflects the diversity of the areas we work in. Diversity and collaboration strengthens our industry connections and helps ensure a more inclusive future.
