Ingleton Wood manages the delivery of award-winning Dining Hall and Kitchens for Homerton College Cambridge Wednesday, 23rd April 2025

We’re thrilled that the Dining Hall at Homerton College, Cambridge, has been honoured with a 2025 Civic Trust Award, recognising its exceptional contribution to the built environment.

Now in its 66th year, the Civic Trust Awards ceremony took place on Friday, 4th April at the Concorde Conference Centre in Altrincham, hosted by architect and broadcaster George Clarke.

Ingleton Wood’s involvement in this development

Appointed by Homerton College, Ingleton Wood acted as Project Manager and Client’s Agent for this transformative £11.6m project. Delivering a bold and sustainable new heart for the College’s social and academic life, the project reflects Homerton’s forward-thinking ethos while respecting the heritage of Cambridge’s architectural landscape.

Ingleton Wood’s Cambridge team worked closely with the College from initial feasibility through to completion — navigating significant challenges to help deliver a bold, sustainable, and award-winning space for students, staff, and the wider community.

This landmark development showcases innovative design and a strong sustainability ethos, exceeding key elements of a BREEAM Excellent rating.

Designed by London-based architects Feilden Fowles, the building is a striking blend of form and function. A robust dark red concrete and brick plinth anchors the building to the site, while a dramatic butterfly roof rises above vertical green faience fins, creating a dynamic and elegant profile. Bronze and aluminium cladding and sweeping curtain-walled elevations complete the contemporary look.

Collaborating to overcome unique challenges

This project did not have a straightforward journey.

Construction first began in 2020, just as the world was changing due to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, closely following the guidelines in place at the time, the teams involved navigated complex supply chain issues and rising material costs, applying smart value engineering and close collaboration to stay on schedule.

Despite the pressures, the building was completed in 2022, delivering on the College’s ambition and standing as a testament to resilience, innovation, and teamwork.

Designed with purpose

The Dining Hall is more than just a building — it’s a space to gather, share, and celebrate. Whether it’s daily meals, formal occasions, or special events, this facility now plays a vital role in college life for students, staff, and guests.

It also leads the way in sustainable design, featuring high-performance materials, energy-efficient systems, and low-carbon technologies – all aligned with Homerton’s commitment to environmental responsibility.

A team effort

A project of this scale and quality depends on collaboration. Alongside Feilden Fowles, we worked with, Barnes Construction (Main Contractor), MJS (Reinforced Concrete Frame) and DPL Group (MEP Services); all of whom played an essential role in delivering this exceptional new facility.

This now Civic Trust award-winning project reflects not only architectural excellence, but also the vision, collaboration, and perseverance that brought it to life.

We’re honoured to have supported Homerton College in creating a space that will serve generations to come, and we congratulate everyone involved.

Thank you to the Civic Trust Awards for this incredible recognition!
