In direct response to the Church of England's commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions across all UK churches by 2030, Ingleton Wood is proud to have collaborated with the iconic Wells Cathedral in developing a comprehensive carbon reduction strategy.
Recognising the importance of this ambitious target, Wells Cathedral appointed Ingleton Wood to conduct a thorough carbon-usage audit of their historic site.
Our in-house team of experts worked closely with the Cathedral to assess their current energy consumption and identify key areas for optimisation and improved efficiency. After working closely with the Cathedral and gaining a comprehensive understanding of their current usage, Ingleton Wood were able to propose a bespoke reduction strategy that optimises energy usage while respecting the Cathedral’s rich heritage.
The proposed strategy not only aligns with the Church of England’s net-zero target but also ensures that Wells Cathedral will remain a beacon of sustainability and responsible stewardship.
Nerys Watts, Chief Operating Officer at Wells Cathedral, commented;
“Achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2030 for Wells Cathedral is a significant but challenging target. Having a strategy to set out how we can work towards this is a crucial first step as we explore all options to help take us forward and make progress in this important area.”
Ingleton Wood is proud to have contributed to the preservation and enhancement of Wells Cathedral, which includes several globally recognised areas, including;
- The ‘structural scissors’ – the only cathedral to utilise this innovative retrofit system.
- Vicars Close – the oldest continuously inhabited residential street in Europe.
- The Chapter House – a stunning architectural masterpiece known for its fan-vaulted ceiling.

Peter Webb, Partner at Ingleton Wood, commented on the successful project;
“We are honoured to support Wells Cathedral in its journey towards net-zero emissions, and our carbon reduction strategy is designed to meet the unique challenges of maintaining a historic site while embracing modern sustainability practices.
This partnership underscores Ingleton Wood's commitment to helping historic and sacred spaces transition to a more sustainable future, in line with the Church of England's environmental goals”.
