Ingleton Wood has completed a major refurbishment at Thorpe Wood Police Station for Cambridge Constabulary, delivering a state-of-the-art Protective Policing Specialist Training (PPST) facility across two floors of what was an existing office space.
Multidisciplinary expertise
Our team provided building surveying, project management, mechanical engineering, and electrical engineering services, working in collaboration with Neville Special Projects to ensure a seamless delivery that met the Constabulary’s tight build programme.
The upgraded facility now features a fully equipped gym and running track on the ground floor to accommodate on-site physical fitness tests and training. The first floor has been converted to a scenario training room with a ‘dojo’ style fit out designed in collaboration with Ultimat Defence Limited. The first floor also features two multi-purpose classroom spaces to provide a dedicated first aid training area.
Each floor was carefully designed in partnership with the officers who use the site, ensuring the facility supports their practical needs while reflecting their identity and operational requirements.
Harry Maclean, Head of Estates & Facilities, Cambs Constabulary, commented:
“To allow us to keep pace with the ever-increasing needs on the police estate, we need to modernise outdated buildings to give facilities that officers and staff are pleased to use.
Centralising functions such as gym, PPST, and first-aid training into modern facilities in one place allows us to make better use of other parts of the estate; re-purposing areas to bring together police teams from different parts of the County into one central dynamic team”.
Delivering the project within an active police station directly opposite a live custody unit presented unique challenges, but through careful planning and coordination, our team minimised disruption and kept the project on schedule.
Where possible, existing infrastructure was repurposed, including the existing Junckers flooring, to maximise project value and sustainability.
Supporting Bluelight clients
This project builds on Ingleton Wood’s long-standing partnership with Cambridge Constabulary, with earlier work on-site including custody suite maintenance, refreshed interview rooms, redecorating, new signage, and specialist electro-chromatic cell doors.
The Thorpe Wood refurbishment demonstrates how Ingleton Wood combines expertise, innovation, and collaboration to deliver practical, high-quality solutions, even in complex and operationally sensitive environments.
