🥇 Winner – Hay Hill, Norwich | Category: Designed Landscape

This category recognises outstanding landscape settings in new developments, conservation projects, and public green spaces.
Hay Hill, a major urban revitalisation project, has transformed a busy city-centre pedestrian area into a calm green oasis.
Congratulations to Norwich City Council’s in-house landscape design team for delivering such an inspiring public-realm transformation, for which Ingleton Wood provided engineering and architecture expertise.
What the judges said:
“Hay Hill is a landscape garden in central Norwich, bordered by shops, Gentleman’s Walk and St Peter Mancroft Church. It’s a busy, high-footfall area, even more so since the space reopened. The judges felt the designers had thoughtfully considered every aspect: the site context, surrounding shopfronts and church, circulation and inclusivity, the water feature, seating, mature trees, existing tenants, materials, and the site’s history, including its relationship to the Sir Thomas Browne statue. The planting has been carefully selected to enhance the space, bringing joy to visitors and allowing the existing trees to thrive.
The designers also approached the construction process sensitively, respecting existing users and neighbours. The landscape is sustainable, particularly in its closed-loop water system. The judges believe this space deserves recognition as a well-designed, well-constructed scheme that successfully serves the public despite numerous site constraints."

🏅 Commendation – Purdy Street, Salthouse | Category: Houses & Housing

This category celebrates buildings for habitation, including single dwellings, housing developments, extensions, and conversions.
Salthouse is Broadland Housing Group’s exceptional zero-carbon affordable housing scheme, delivered by H Smith & Sons, Ingleton Wood provided multidisciplinary support on the project, contributing our expertise in architecture, planning, and sustainability.
This development received its commendation for its place-specific vernacular and thoughtful design, which integrates seamlessly into its picturesque north Norfolk village setting.
What the judges said:
"This courtyard-style development of affordable houses has been built to a high degree of sustainability close to Passivhaus standards.
Whilst achieving a very high EPC rating, they also contextually fit in very well, so the buildings do not have to end up looking unusual to be sustainable. The judges thought that this was a good community development with a traditional appearance designed to fit in rather than stand out."
