As a multidisciplinary practice, we believe in creating vibrant, inclusive workplaces where every team member can reach their full potential.
Central to this ethos remains our commitment to apprenticeships, providing hands-on experience and practical skills that help individuals build long-term, fulfilling careers in the built environment.
Lily Green’s story is a perfect example; joining Ingleton Wood in 2015, fresh from university, as a Part 1 Architectural Assistant in our Colchester office. Today, Lily is an Associate Architect, helping shape projects and mentoring others within our Design team.
Reflecting on her journey from apprentice to associate, Lily says: “My apprenticeship gave me invaluable hands-on experience alongside my studies, helping me develop strong technical, communication, and time-management skills, all while working on live projects. This unique combination provided the foundation that was instrumental in my professional and personal growth.”
Lily’s journey didn’t stop there:
"Ingleton Wood has consistently supported my development through structured mentoring, exposure to a wide variety of projects, and opportunities to take on increasing responsibility. The Practice encourages continued learning, supports progression through professional stages, and has trusted me to develop leadership skills. I’m currently undertaking an NRAC course to qualify as an Access Consultant, which will further broaden my expertise and develop my role within the firm.”

Recognising the importance of apprenticeships and how essential they are for the future of the industry, Lily comments, “They widen access to the profession, helping to diversify the workforce. Apprenticeship programmes develop well-rounded professionals with a strong understanding of both design and delivery, alongside academic knowledge.”
Lily also highlights the importance of a progressive culture within the workplace, “Ingleton Wood offers a supportive environment where apprentices are valued and given genuine opportunities to progress. Career development is encouraged at all levels, through mentoring, structured pathways, and long-term investment in talent”.
"We’re always eager to recruit and nurture the next generation of built environment professionals, so if an apprenticeship sounds like a good fit, get in touch.”
Lily’s journey demonstrates how Ingleton Wood’s apprenticeship programme is more than just a stepping stone; it’s a launchpad for meaningful careers that shape both the people and the spaces we live and work in.
