We believe the future of the built environment depends on how well we support the next generation today.
Our partnership with Colchester Institute through the Design, Surveying and Planning for Construction T Level is a key part of this commitment, and Annabelle’s recent industry placement is a fantastic example of the impact these opportunities can have.
From day one, Annabelle has been immersed in real project work and real teams, gaining first-hand experience across architecture, building services, and surveying. This multidisciplinary exposure allows her to see how different specialisms collaborate to bring projects to life; something that can’t be fully appreciated in the classroom alone.
A particular highlight of her placement was working with our Design team on a live school project in South Essex, where she supported the development of designs and drawings using Revit.
“I’ve really enjoyed working with the Design team to develop designs and drawings on Revit for a school project. I’ve learnt so much that I’m now giving tips to other students in my course on how to use it.”
Developing Revit skills has been a major milestone for Annabelle and one that directly supports her future ambitions.
After completing her T Level, she plans to study architecture at university and feels her time at Ingleton Wood has given her a valuable head start.
“Once I’ve completed my T Level, I want to study architecture at university, and the Revit skills I’ve developed on my placement will really help me when I start my course.”
For Annabelle, the placement wasn’t just about technical development; it was also about building confidence in a professional environment for the first time.
“Other than a short work experience placement at a primary school a few years ago, I didn’t have experience working in a professional environment. To anyone in a similar position, I’d say be confident and don’t be afraid to ask questions!”

Reflecting on her overall experience, Annabelle summed up her time with Ingleton Wood in one sentence:
“It’s been an eye-opening and extremely valuable experience. I know I want to study architecture, but I’ve also learnt a lot about Building Services, which I’ve really enjoyed.”
Annabelle’s experience highlights exactly why T Level industry placements are so important, not only for students, but for the industry as a whole.
Nicky Brown, Lead Stakeholder & Employment Officer (STEM) at Colchester Institute, commented:
“T Levels and industry placements give students a vital opportunity to connect education with the workplace, developing technical skills, confidence, and professionalism. Our partnership with Ingleton Wood has been fantastic - Annabelle has gained hands-on experience across teams, settled in well, and benefited from brilliant support and clear communication from staff throughout. This collaboration is a great example of how T Levels prepare young people for their careers while adding real value to employers.”
As a practice, we are proud to support T Level students like Annabelle by providing meaningful project experience, mentoring, and exposure to multidisciplinary working. It’s an investment not only in young people, but in the long-term strength and future of the built environment profession.
